WHAT ARE BIOLOGICAL SEPTIC TANKS?

Biological septic tanks are sewage treatment systems designed to decompose organic waste through natural biological processes. They are a sustainable alternative to traditional septic tanks because they utilize aerobic microorganisms (which require oxygen to live) to decompose the waste, resulting in a high-quality treated effluent.

How do biological septic tanks work?

1. Biological decomposition: The operation of biological septic tanks relies on the activity of aerobic microorganisms present in the system. These microorganisms consume the organic waste in the sewage, breaking it down into simpler substances such as water, carbon dioxide, and inorganic compounds.

2. Treatment process: Domestic sewage is directed to the biological septic tank, where biological decomposition of the waste occurs. During this process, aerobic microorganisms consume the organic matter, thus reducing the pollutant load of the effluent.

3. Solid separator: Some biological septic tanks also have a solid separation system, which retains larger solid waste, allowing only treated liquids to be discharged into the environment.

4. Treated effluent: After undergoing the biological decomposition process, the treated effluent can be discharged into the natural environment, provided it meets the quality standards established by environmental authorities. In many cases, the treated effluent can also be reused for garden irrigation or toilet flushing.
